Sparklike Handheld NOVA™ is the next-generation handheld device for measuring insulating gas in double glazed insulating glass units. Place the device against the unit, press the button, and receive an instant result in 2 seconds. NOVA features an updated design and improved functionalities for daily production use.
Sparklike Handheld NOVA™ uses spark emission spectroscopy to determine argon concentration in sealed units. The method enables non-destructive inert gas measurement in insulating glass production and quality control.
With over 2,500 handheld devices delivered and more than 1,000 customers worldwide, Sparklike technology has demonstrated long-term industrial relevance across global insulating glass manufacturing environments.
Sparklike Handheld NOVA™ is used by insulating glass and window manufacturers to verify insulating gas concentration as part of routine quality control processes.
Measurements are carried out once the insulating glass unit is ready for inspection, supporting batch verification, quality assurance procedures, and documented control.
Typical applications in manufacturing environments:
We offer extended warranty options to support long-term reliability and performance. Ensure your device continues to operate accurately and efficiently throughout its lifecycle.
Available options:
The device is primarily designed for use in factories or laboratories, supporting quality control at different stages of the production process.
Sparklike does not recommend using the Handheld™ device in the field, as direct sunlight can interfere with measurement accuracy. However, it has been successfully used in some cases for measuring installed windows. As a rule of thumb, accurate results depend on knowing the glass structure being measured.
Sparklike Handheld™ can measure certain coated and laminated insulating glass units, but there are limitations based on glass type and structure.
Low-E coatings:
Yes, the device can measure double-glazed IG units that have one Low-E coating, provided the other pane is clear glass. The measurement must always be taken through the clear side, as Low-E coatings reflect the light emission used in spark technology.
Laminated glass:
Sparklike Handheld™ can measure through thin laminated glass under specific conditions:
Typically 1 or 2 interlayers of 0.38 mm each (e.g., 3+3 mm or 4+4 mm glass)
Higher gas fill rates improve spark penetration
Measure close to the spacer for best accuracy
The spark must be visible during measurement
Laminated units with multiple interlayers or excessive thickness may not produce reliable results.
For IGUs with multiple coatings, complex laminations, or triple glazing, Sparklike recommends using a Sparklike Laser device, which can measure through coatings and laminations using laser (TDLAS) technology.
The result is displayed in about two seconds, enabling fast checks even in high-volume production.
The Sparklike Handheld™ measures argon as standard and can be configured to measure krypton at the time of manufacturing.
It is important to note that the gas type cannot be changed later as the measurement configuration is defined during production. Therefore, customers should confirm their preferred gas type when ordering the device.
Thanks to its small size, it is easy to get a fast reading of gas concentration. The user can simply place the device against the unit, press the button and receive an instant result with high accuracy.
